WOMEN WILL
DRIVE THE WEB
Copyright
1997
by Ed Howdershelt
By 2000, just about half of all internet users will be women.
(Stick around three years if you don't believe me.)
Simplicity and convenience will make this so as the web matures into the infocenter and marketplace of the future.
Software will become easier to use, even if not necessarily more dependable. Computers as home-communications devices will become almost as common as televisions or phones.
Catalog-supply houses are jumping aboard the net in droves. Office-working women will be ordering supplies and handling business communications on-line. They'll be logging on with a list of things to look for and places to look, and once those things are found, they'll be bought and the site bookmarked.
This purchasing system will go home with them. Women will be looking for housewares, furniture, art, clothing, jewelry, make-up info, printable store and product discount coupons, vacation info, consumer reports, movie and restaurant reviews, tickets to a play, kids' toys, and all sorts of other things.
In short, they'll be shopping.
Without needing a babysitter or having to find a parking space or taking time away from another activity to drive somewhere, they'll be shopping.
You might even call it multitasking.
Women won't have to deal with salespeople when they shop for a new car or stereo. They'll just add up the features and compare the prices without having some geek speaking technobabble at them or pressuring them to buy something with a bigger commission.
If they don't know what a tech-term means or why something may somehow be an important purchase consideration, they'll simply look it up before proceeding. No more depending on a boyfriend's questionable knowledge or biased judgement concerning cars or stereo gear. Most features + best price = Best Deal. Done.
Housewives who may be juggling kids, meals, soccer games, money, schools, and all the other daily details will learn (possibly from their kids) how to use the net to shop and to keep in contact with family members who may be away in college or in the military or just in another state or country.
The net won't belong only to computer geeks and corporations. It will become just as much the domain of women.
